The X-men Silver You Didn't X-pect

Image
I like to do things opponents won't likely expect me to do. In this case I think I hit the bullseye. I also would hope my team build is effective and maybe even a challenge to face. You'll have to decide for yourself how you'd play this. First of all, with credit to HCUnits you can view this team HERE , but here is a screen grab as well. The first character I was thinking of was Dust. I know she isn't a favorite or anywhere close to meta right now, but I wanted to build a team she could be a bit useful on. Giving her the universal weapon expands that use well. Her free smoke cloud comes in handy after Cyclops pulls everyone together. So that second turn trick is definitely part of the strategy here. Keeping Dust where she can smoke cloud the front line. I'm sure your first thought is "why Absorbing man?". As a distraction. A great deal of this wild mixup is designed as a head scratcher while still having offensive value in combat. You won't likely se...

Deep Dive: Venom!

Image
Today I'm taking a much closer look at the new Venom set already celebrating pre-release events across the country. My inspection will search out the best and worst this set has to offer and how well it plays with others (as in other sets). I'm going to start with one of the most fundamental points in team building, the keyword. The big winners for keywords in this set are no surprise. Well, except that monster beats out symbiote by just one figure. Those numbers from my count are 55 and 54 respectively.  The biggest loser for keywords in this set is Wild Pack. What? What a left field appearance but then it usually is. Here is my attempt at building a silver team for Wild Pack. Credit HCUnits Yeah, that's not going to work. It feels like this is one of those keywords that gets slapped on when someone happens to think about it.  There are a lot of keywords that only appear once in the whole set, but that doesn't mean they aren't playable in modern with good current...

Team Building: The Skrull 800

Image
I like Skrulls! I like them to the point of making an open play golden age team that I think would be fun to play. Here is the screen shot, and here is the LINK .  For 800 points it's not a lot of Skrulls but with the abilities onboard I think they can manage. Particularly the Generals. I would put them each at opposite corners of the map to make sure I have them as long as possible. In case you don't know, the Generals make it so when a Skrull makes their shape change roll, the attacker can't target another Skrull, effectively ending that character's action. Super Skrull loves the Universal Weapon because if anyone needs choices of powers it's him. This is by far my favorite version of him even with a newer version out there. I enjoy the diverse options that keep him at top form in combat. Silver Surfer gets Animal Man as I've always had him go down first in games. People just don't like him over Super Skrull for some reason. Hulkling sort of leads the te...

Team Building: Common Avengers

Image
Team idea: your entire starting force must be all commons. Call it "commoners" build if you will. In today's team I went with Avengers. Now I must tell you, when I post my team builds, I build from what I actually have. If you have a different idea, you should do it. Your team can still have a sideline and equipment but I avoided a lot of extras on this build. I aimed for the core essence of these figures. You can see the build HERE via HC Units but here is the screen grab: One of the best defensive lines on this team is Dr Strange. TK, barrier and punishment for outwit, perplex and prob used on your guys. Giving them all mystics TA is exceptional. I rarely play him above his 40-point line because I can get better offense out of other characters. Doc serves well in the background, and I have him a friend to hang out with.  The team is level with both ranged and close up combat options. It has a decent array of powers and versatility. As you can see, though the starting ...

The Dungeons and Dragons set we've been waiting for?

Image
Considering that just about any DnD set would be amazing for heroclix, I have to say yes! The teaser image floating around the internet sets off speculations and excitement. I'm personally looking forward to what kind of crossovers could be formed for teams. Team building is a long-standing favorite of mine even though I won't play half the teams I create. I'm sure the beholder and owlbear were test markets and they went over swimmingly. But what we expect to see with a DnD set according to the image or just our best guesswork? Keywords: My first pondering was this. What sort of keywords can we expect? I'm sure we'll see mystical, monster, animal, warrior, and likely marksman. How about ranger? Wizard? Goblin? Demon? Undead? There are a lot of possibilities, and I hope Wizkids has a good variety to set off themes. Just imagine what goblins could do for each other. Pathfinder could be a clever keyword, but maybe too clever. And of course, one crazy generic keyword ...
